The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and the Orion Initiative are partnering with rural hospitals to strengthen the primary care workforce through an innovative hiring incentive.
The Orion Initiative Difference
The Recruit-Primary Care Provider (Recruit-PCP) grant program offers eligible rural hospitals grant funding to support a portion of a newly hired physician’s salary for time spent working on a community project. This hiring incentive offers professional fulfillment, prevents burnout and supports the community.
Real-World Impact
The first Recruit-PCP project launched at Emplify Health by Gundersen Friendship Hospital and Clinics in Friendship, Wisconsin. With support from Recruit-PCP grant funds, the hospital successfully hired a full-time family medicine physician after a seven-year vacancy.

“The Orion Initiative gave us the tools we needed to recruit and retain a primary care physician in our rural community after seven years without one. Having Dr. Lungba here has improved continuity of care for our patients and strengthened collaboration across our care team.”
